Overview

"Neurotrophic support" is not a canonical molecular target but rather refers broadly to the biological process by which **neurotrophic factors**, a family of secreted peptides/proteins—including the well-characterized *neurotrophins* like NGF, BDNF, NT3, NT4/5; glial cell line-derived ligands; and neuropoietic cytokines—promote the survival, differentiation, maintenance, plasticity, and regeneration of neurons in both developing and mature nervous systems. These proteins exert their effects primarily through receptor tyrosine kinases such as TrkA/B/C receptors or p75NTR. They play critical roles in neural development and repair after injury. While intensely studied for therapeutic applications in various neurological diseases including ALS and depression—and considered promising targets at the level of individual molecules—the term "neurotrophic support" itself is too broad/vague to be considered a discrete therapeutic target molecule/receptor.

Mechanism of action

Drugs or biologics that mimic or enhance the activity of specific neurotrophic factors act by: - Activating receptor tyrosine kinases such as TrkA/B/C or p75NTR to promote neuronal survival and regeneration. Some small molecules aim to upregulate endogenous production of these factors.
