The target "neurotrophic factor secretion by mesenchymal stem cell" refers to the ability of cultured or engineered mesenchymal stem cells to secrete various neuroprotective and growth-promoting factors—collectively called neurotrophic factors—into their environment. This cellular function is not attributed to a single molecule or receptor but rather describes an activity that can be induced in MSCs through specific culture conditions. Therapeutically enhanced MSC-NTF cells have been shown to secrete significantly higher levels of these factors compared to naive MSCs. This increased secretory capacity is thought to underlie their potential benefits in neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and MS by promoting neuronal survival and modulating immune responses. Clinical studies have demonstrated safety and some evidence of slowed disease progression following administration of these modified MSCs via intrathecal or intramuscular routes[1][2]. Biomarkers such as NfL, pNfH, sCD27, osteopontin, and muscle volume are used for monitoring patient response.
