Overview

Neurotrophin expression" refers to the process by which neurotrophin proteins such as NGF, BDNF, NT-3, and NT-4/5 are transcribed and translated in various cell types, particularly neurons and glia, in the nervous system. Neurotrophins are essential secreted growth factors that regulate neuron survival, differentiation, axonal growth, synaptic plasticity, and maintenance in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. The effects of neurotrophins are mediated via two main receptor families: the high-affinity Trk receptors (TrkA, TrkB, TrkC), and the low-affinity p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR)[5][1][4][8]. Variations in neurotrophin expression and signaling have been linked to disorders such as neurodegeneration, psychiatric disease, and cancer[3][5].
