Neutral alpha-glucosidase C (GANC)

Target
GANC
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Glycosyl hydrolase family, Glycosidase
01

Overview

Neutral alpha-glucosidase C is a human enzyme encoded by the GANC gene. It is a member of the glycosyl hydrolase family and catalyzes the hydrolysis of terminal, non-reducing alpha-linked glucose residues from carbohydrates. This enzyme plays a role in carbohydrate metabolism, particularly in processing oligosaccharides and polysaccharides into glucose. Unlike the more clinically targeted lysosomal/acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA), neutral alpha-glucosidase C is not a major target for current drugs but may be relevant in research as a biomarker in some clinical scenarios, such as reproductive health[1][5][6].

Other names

Mechanism of action

not a classic therapeutic target; by analogy, inhibition would block terminal glucose cleavage in carbohydrates[2]

03

Biological functions

Carbohydrate metabolismCatalysis of glycosidic bond hydrolysisCatalytic activity on alpha-linked glucose residues
04

Disease associations

Other (no strong disease linkage widely established, but enzyme activity used as a marker in reproductive disorders[6])
05

Safety considerations

no documented safety concerns regarding as a drug targetno clinical-stage neutral alpha-glucosidase C inhibitors
