Neutrophil-derived oxygen free radicals are highly reactive molecules produced by neutrophils, primarily as part of the innate immune response. These radicals play a central role in host defense by killing invading pathogens but can also contribute to tissue damage and inflammation when produced in excess. The main oxygen free radicals generated by neutrophils include superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, hypochlorous acid, and singlet oxygen. Overproduction or dysregulation of neutrophil-derived ROS is implicated in various diseases, including acute lung injury, cardiovascular dysfunction, and chronic inflammatory diseases.
