Neutrophil Elastase (NE)

Target
NE
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine Protease
01

Overview

Neutrophil elastase (NE) is a serine protease enzyme primarily found in the azurophilic granules of neutrophils. It plays a crucial role in host defense by degrading engulfed microorganisms and organic molecules, as well as modulating inflammation and tissue remodeling. Aberrant expression or regulation contributes significantly to several diseases, including chronic lung diseases and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Consequently, it is an important drug discovery target for inhibitor development aimed at reducing pathological proteolysis without compromising host defense functions.
