Neutrophil Extracellular Trap (NET)

Target
NET
Molecular classification
Extracellular Matrix, Complex, DNA-based structure
01

Overview

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are web-like structures released by neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, as part of the innate immune response. These structures are primarily composed of decondensed chromatin (DNA) decorated with histones and various antimicrobial proteins derived from neutrophil granules. The main function of NETs is to trap and neutralize invading pathogens.

02

Mechanism of action

NETs trap and neutralize invading pathogens by immobilizing them in the extracellular space and exposing them to high local concentrations of antimicrobial agents.
