Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation is a unique antimicrobial defense mechanism employed by neutrophils. NETs are web-like structures composed primarily of decondensed chromatin (DNA and histones) decorated with various antimicrobial proteins. These structures are released into the extracellular space to immobilize, entrap, and kill invading pathogens. While beneficial for pathogen control, excessive or dysregulated NET formation has been implicated in various diseases, including autoimmune diseases, thrombosis, and cancer. It can occur via suicidal or vital NETosis. Detection and standardization of assays remain an area needing consensus development.
