Neutrophil-mediated inflammation refers to the series of immune responses in which neutrophils are recruited to sites of tissue injury or infection and drive local and systemic inflammatory processes. These cells are central to host defense, as their activation leads to phagocytosis, release of reactive oxygen species, proteolytic enzymes, and formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). While these mechanisms are critical for pathogen elimination, excessive or unregulated neutrophil activity contributes to tissue damage and a wide spectrum of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Therapeutic strategies aim to balance the beneficial effects of neutrophil activation with the prevention of excessive inflammation and tissue injury, typically by targeting molecules involved in their recruitment (e.g., chemokine receptors), activation, or survival. Note: “Neutrophil-mediated inflammation” describes a targetable process, not a molecular entity. For structured databases requiring a molecule, this entry should be flagged as imprecise. For pharmacological and clinical purposes, however, the process remains a major area of therapeutic intervention.
