Overview

Neutrophil percentage is a clinical laboratory measurement that reflects the proportion of neutrophils within the total white blood cell population. It is not a molecular drug target, such as an enzyme or receptor, but rather a diagnostic parameter used to evaluate immune system health and inflammatory status (StatPearls, 2023). Neutrophils are the primary responders to acute bacterial infections and play a central role in the innate immune response through phagocytosis and the release of antimicrobial enzymes (NIH, 2022). Clinically, the neutrophil percentage is used to identify conditions like neutrophilia, often seen in infection or tissue injury, and neutropenia, which can be caused by chemotherapy or bone marrow disorders (Mayo Clinic, 2023). While drugs like Filgrastim and Pegfilgrastim are used to modulate neutrophil levels by targeting the G-CSF receptor, the percentage itself is monitored as a biomarker for drug efficacy and safety, particularly in oncology and hematology (FDA, 2021).

Mechanism of action

Drugs do not target the percentage directly; hematopoietic growth factors stimulate the Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) receptor to promote the production, maturation, and activation of neutrophils, whereas cytotoxic drugs or immunosuppressants decrease the percentage by inhibiting myeloid cell proliferation in the bone marrow (FDA, 2021; StatPearls, 2023).
