New York esophageal squamous cell carcinoma 1 (NY-ESO-1) is a cancer/testis antigen (CTA) with restricted expression in normal adult tissues and aberrant re-expression in various cancers. Its strong immunogenicity makes it a target for immunotherapy. It is encoded by the CTAG1B gene and elicits both humoral and cellular immune responses. The precise biological function of NY-ESO-1 remains incompletely understood, but it may be involved in cell cycle regulation, proliferation, or stem/germ cell self-renewal/differentiation.
Immunotherapy strategies (vaccines, adoptive T-cell therapies) aim to elicit or enhance anti-tumor immune responses against NY-ESO-1 expressing cells.
