Overview

NGF antisense RNA 1 (NGF-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA gene transcribed from the antisense strand of the NGF (nerve growth factor) gene region. NGF-AS1 does not encode a protein but may regulate the expression of the NGF gene or other neural developmental pathways through RNA-mediated mechanisms. Mutations or dysregulation of NGF-AS1 are associated with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type V, a rare genetic disorder causing pain insensitivity and autonomic dysfunction, as well as general neuropathy. There is currently limited evidence for its role as a direct therapeutic target, and no drugs are known to specifically act upon NGF-AS1. Its mechanistic and clinical relevance is an area of ongoing research, primarily at the level of understanding RNA-based regulation and its contribution to disease phenotypes. No evidence currently points to NGF-AS1 as a direct therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Its main classification is as a long noncoding RNA, involved in regulation rather than direct signaling or catalysis. If further detail on candidate functional mechanisms or disease involvement is needed, a deeper search into recent transcriptomics and functional genomics literature would be required.
