NHSL1-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA, Natural antisense transcript (NAT)

Overview

NHSL1 antisense RNA 1 (NHSL1-AS1, FLJ46906) is a long non-coding RNA upregulated in aging human skin fibroblasts. It directly binds the transcription factors NF-κB and AP-1, thereby influencing the expression of several aging-associated genes involved in inflammation (IL1B, IL6, CXCL8), extracellular matrix remodeling (TGFB1, ELN), and other cellular processes. It does not appear to regulate its neighboring genes in cis, nor act via a classic antisense RNA mechanism. Instead, its main effect is through modulation of transcription factor activity, implying a mechanistic role in cellular aging, especially in skin. No interactions with drugs, established biomarker roles, or clinical therapeutic indications are documented as of current research. If structured, this molecule can be confidently described as a long non-coding RNA involved in transcriptional regulation of aging-associated genes by binding to NF-κB and AP-1; it is not a classic therapeutic target or receptor, but is of biological interest in aging processes.
