Nicotinamide riboside kinase 2 (NMRK2) is an enzyme responsible for catalyzing the phosphorylation of nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinic acid riboside (NaR) to form nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) and nicotinic acid mononucleotide (NaMN), key intermediates in the NAD+ biosynthesis salvage pathway. NMRK2 is implicated in muscle physiology, including regulation of myogenesis, and may affect laminin matrix deposition and cell adhesion. Mutations or altered activity in NMRK2 may contribute to congenital muscular dystrophies and metabolic disorders involving NAD+ deficiency.
