Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand-gated ion channels that respond to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and the exogenous agonist nicotine. They are found in both the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as at neuromuscular junctions in muscle tissue. nAChRs play a critical role in fast synaptic transmission, neuromuscular communication, and various physiological processes including cognition, movement control, and modulation of inflammatory responses.
Binding of acetylcholine or nicotine opens the channel pore, allowing Na⁺ and K⁺ influx leading to depolarization.
