The α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor is a homopentameric ligand-gated ion channel with high calcium permeability. It is expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, playing roles in cognition, inflammation, and other processes. It is a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and other conditions.
Upon binding agonist molecules at extracellular sites between adjacent subunits, the α7 nAChR undergoes a conformational change (“gating cycle”) that opens its central pore, allowing rapid influx of Ca²⁺ and Na⁺ ions into cells.
