The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha-4 beta-2 subtype (α4β2 nAChR) is a neuronal ligand-gated ion channel composed of α4 and β2 subunits. It is the most abundant heteromeric nicotinic receptor in the mammalian brain and plays a central role in mediating the effects of acetylcholine and nicotine on neural activity. It is implicated in cognitive processes and growth hormone secretion. This receptor is also considered the principal biological target underlying nicotine dependence.
Agonist binding increases Na⁺ and K⁺ permeability across neuronal membranes, leading to post-synaptic excitation.
