The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha-7 subunit (α7 nAChR) is a ligand-gated ion channel and a member of the Cys-loop receptor superfamily. It forms homopentameric channels highly permeable to calcium ions (Ca²⁺). It mediates fast synaptic transmission, modulates neurotransmitter release, and plays a role in inflammation. It is implicated in diseases such as Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia and cancer, making it a target for drug development.
Upon binding acetylcholine or selective agonists, the α7 nAChR channel opens, allowing Ca²⁺ influx. This triggers downstream signaling pathways affecting neurotransmitter release or cellular responses. The channel quickly desensitizes even if ligand remains bound.
