Target intelligence / Profile preview

Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Alpha3Beta2 Subtype

Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Cys-loop superfamily, Receptor
01

Overview

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) alpha3beta2 subtype is a neuronal nAChR that responds to acetylcholine and nicotine. It is a pentameric ligand-gated ion channel found in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Upon ligand binding, it allows cation influx, mediating fast synaptic transmission. It plays roles in neurotransmitter release, synaptic plasticity, pain processing, and autonomic ganglionic transmission. Dysfunction is implicated in pain, addiction, and neurodegenerative diseases, making it a target for drug development.
