Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha4 beta2 subtype (α4β2 nAChR)

Target
α4β2 nAChR
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha4 beta2 subtype (α4β2 nAChR) is a ligand-gated ion channel and a major neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in the brain. It is composed of alpha-4 (CHRNA4 gene) and beta-2 (CHRNB2 gene) subunits. This receptor plays a critical role in synaptic transmission, cognitive function, reward pathways, and is the primary biological target mediating nicotine's addictive properties.
