This receptor is a pentameric protein complex composed of α6 and β2 subunits, functioning as a ligand-gated ion channel. It is primarily expressed in dopamine-releasing neurons in the midbrain and dominates nicotinic receptor function in the nucleus accumbens. The α6β2 nAChR is involved in mediating fast synaptic transmission, modulating dopamine release, and contributing to the reinforcing and addictive effects of nicotine.
