It forms part of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), ligand-gated ion channels primarily found in dopaminergic pathways in the central nervous system. Activation of these receptors modulates dopamine release and is implicated in reward processing, addiction, and potentially Parkinson's disease.
