Overview

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha7 subtype (nAChR α7) is a homopentameric ligand-gated ion channel highly permeable to calcium ions. It plays critical roles in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, mediating fast synaptic transmission and modulating various physiological processes including cognition, inflammation, and neuroprotection. It is a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, cognitive disorders and inflammatory conditions.
