Target intelligence / Profile preview
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha7 subunit containing (α7 nAChR) is a homopentameric ligand-gated ion channel primarily permeable to calcium ions. It is highly expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, playing critical roles in synaptic transmission, plasticity, and immune regulation. α7 nAChRs are implicated in various diseases, including cognitive disorders, inflammation, and cancer, making them a target for therapeutic intervention.
Activation of α7 nAChRs leads to calcium influx and downstream signaling pathways including JAK2–STAT3, AMPK–mTOR, and calcium-induced calcium release.
