Overview

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit alpha-7 (α7 nAChR) is a homopentameric ligand-gated ion channel formed by five identical α7 subunits. It is highly permeable to calcium ions and plays critical roles in neuronal and non-neuronal signaling. It is implicated in cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, and its modulation is considered promising for treatment strategies targeting these conditions. Other roles include neuroprotection, inflammation regulation, pain modulation, and cancer progression.
