Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Subunit Beta-2 (CHRNB2)

Target
CHRNB2
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel superfamily, Cys-loop family, Receptor
01

Overview

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit beta-2 (CHRNB2) is a protein that forms part of the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), ligand-gated ion channels found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. These receptors play critical roles in synaptic transmission, modulation of neurotransmitter release, cognitive processes, learning, memory formation, attention regulation, and reward pathways. Mutations in CHRNB2 have been linked to autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy, and variants in this gene may also influence susceptibility to nicotine dependence.

Other names
Neuronal acetylcholine receptor subunit beta-2

Mechanism of action

Agonist binding leads to opening of the ion channel pore, allowing cation influx (Na+, K+, Ca2+).
