NIFK pseudogene 2 is a genomic locus classified as a pseudogene, believed to be derived from NIFK, which encodes a nucleolar protein that interacts with MKI67 (a marker of cell proliferation). Pseudogenes like NIFKP2 typically do not generate functional proteins due to the accumulation of mutations such as frame shifts or premature stop codons. Recent research suggests that some pseudogenes can be transcriptionally active, influencing gene regulation by acting as RNA decoys for microRNAs or producing small interfering RNAs, thereby modulating their parent gene's expression or participating in complex regulatory networks. However, for NIFK pseudogene 2 specifically, no evidence has been published establishing direct biological function or disease involvement—its status remains a noncoding, nonfunctional gene without known clinical or therapeutic relevance.
