Overview

NINJ2 antisense RNA 1 (NINJ2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) classified as an antisense transcript overlapping the NINJ2 gene.[1][5][7] It does not code for a protein but regulates gene expression via transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms, especially of the NINJ2 gene (which encodes a cell adhesion molecule involved in nerve regeneration and inflammatory processes).[1][4] NINJ2-AS1 is implicated in gene regulation by functioning as an enhancer, by recruiting transcription factors and epigenetic modifiers, and by modulating alternative splicing.[1][3] It shows differential expression in several cancer types and potentially other diseases, and may serve as a biomarker for disease state or progression.[1] There are currently no known drugs specifically targeting NINJ2-AS1, and it is not established as a therapeutic target in the way proteins (such as receptors or enzymes) are.[7] Its detailed biological and pathological roles continue to be researched.
