Overview

NIP7 pseudogene 1 (NIP7P1) is a pseudogene related to the NIP7 locus. Pseudogenes are DNA elements resembling genes, but that have lost protein-coding ability due to mutations or lack the necessary regulatory elements. Pseudogenes may be transcriptionally active and in some cases can regulate gene expression via RNA-mediated mechanisms (such as miRNA competition or acting as decoys), but there is no evidence that NIP7P1 encodes a functional protein or plays a direct therapeutic role. NIP7P1 is not considered a validated therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or actionable molecule in drug development. Clarification: If the therapeutic target of interest is the NIP7 protein-coding gene (not the pseudogene), refer to "Nucleolar pre-rRNA processing protein NIP7," which is involved in ribosome biogenesis and cell proliferation. However, "NIP7 pseudogene 1" itself is not a receptor, enzyme, or protein target; it is a non-coding sequence.

Biological functions

Pseudogenes are generally considered non-coding RNA elements without protein functionSome pseudogenes may have biological regulatory roles (e.g., acting as competing endogenous RNAs or miRNA sponges), but there is no evidence for a functional role of NIP7P1 specifically.

Disease associations

Other (pseudogene expression can be dysregulated in cancer or other diseases, but there are no reports specifically on NIP7P1).
