Release of nitric oxide (NO) or related species that activate soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), increasing cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels, leading to activation of cGMP-dependent protein kinases and reduced intracellular calcium concentrations, resulting in vasodilation and inhibition of platelet aggregation.
