Overview

Nitric oxide mobilization" refers to the process by which nitric oxide (NO)—a short-lived, endogenously produced gaseous molecule— is synthesized primarily by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes from L-arginine and released into tissues to act as a versatile signaling molecule. NO diffuses freely across membranes, binding to targets such as soluble guanylate cyclase in vascular smooth muscle to produce cGMP and cause vasodilation, inhibits platelet aggregation, and acts as a neurotransmitter and immune effector. It has essential roles in cardiovascular regulation, neurotransmission, and host defense but is not itself a molecular drug target; instead, its pathway components (NOS enzymes, guanylate cyclase) serve as recognized pharmacological targets.

Mechanism of action

Stimulate guanylate cyclase to increase cGMP, leading to vasodilation. Inhibition of platelet aggregation. Modulation of neuronal transmission through cGMP and S-nitrosylation. Immune cytotoxicity (via macrophage NO production).
