Nitric Oxide Release (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Gaseous signaling molecule, Biological process
01

Overview

Nitric oxide (NO) release is the biological process by which nitric oxide, a gaseous signaling molecule, is produced and liberated from cells. NO plays critical roles in vascular tone regulation, neurotransmission, immune response modulation, and other physiological processes. It is synthesized primarily from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthases (NOS) but can also arise from non-enzymatic sources. NO is not stored but synthesized on demand and diffuses freely across cell membranes to exert its effects.

02

Mechanism of action

Primarily enzymatic synthesis from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthases (nNOS, iNOS, eNOS), leading to diffusion across cell membranes and activation of downstream targets like soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC). Can also occur non-enzymatically via nitrite reduction.
