A nitric oxide (NO) scavenger is any molecule or agent that reacts with and removes nitric oxide from a biological or chemical system. These agents are used to modulate NO levels, particularly in pathological conditions where excess NO contributes to disease processes. Examples include PTIO, pyridoxalated hemoglobin polyoxyethylene conjugate (PHP), iron/ruthenium complexes and glucosamine salts. The mechanism of action involves chemical neutralization, binding, or enzymatic degradation of nitric oxide.
