Overview

Nitric oxide synthase 2 pseudogene 1 is a pseudogene related to the canonical nitric oxide synthase, inducible (NOS2) gene. Unlike NOS2, which is an enzyme responsible for nitric oxide synthesis and has well-characterized roles in immunity, inflammation, and cancer, NOS2P1 is not protein-coding. Pseudogenes like NOS2P1 may regulate their parent genes through antisense RNA or the production of truncated nonfunctional proteins that can act as natural dominant-negative regulators[1][3][11]. While emerging evidence suggests that pseudogenes may participate in fine-tuning gene expression and, in some cases, potentially influence disease processes indirectly, NOS2P1 itself is not considered a classic drug target. Instead, research interest is mainly focused on its putative regulatory roles over NOS2 activity in certain biological contexts. There are currently no known drugs, diagnostic biomarkers, or therapeutic safety concerns directly attributed to NOS2P1. Note: If your goal is structured drug-target information, NOS2P1 does *not* meet the criteria for protein, receptor, enzyme, or transporter; it is recognized solely as a pseudogene[11]. Its relevance is confined to genomic regulation research rather than therapeutic intervention. If you are seeking information about therapeutic targeting, the canonical "Nitric oxide synthase, inducible (NOS2)"—not NOS2P1—is the principal target[6][7][10].
