Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)

Target
eNOS
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is a constitutively expressed enzyme crucial for cardiovascular health through its generation of nitric oxide—a molecule essential for regulating vessel tone, inhibiting thrombosis/inflammation within vessels—and whose dysfunction underlies many common cardiovascular pathologies. eNOS catalyzes the oxidation of L-arginine to produce nitric oxide (NO) and L-citrulline, requiring cofactors such as calmodulin, BH4, FMN, FAD, and NADPH.
