Nitrogen Disposal Pathway

Molecular classification
Metabolic Pathway
01

Overview

The nitrogen disposal pathway refers to the metabolic processes by which excess nitrogen, primarily from amino acid catabolism, is safely removed from the body. In mammals and many other vertebrates, this is achieved mainly through the urea cycle in the liver, which converts toxic ammonia into urea for excretion via urine. Alternative pathways exist for nitrogen disposal when the urea cycle is impaired or overwhelmed.

Mechanism of action

Phenylbutyrate conjugates with amino acids, creating alternative routes for nitrogen excretion.
