Target intelligence / Profile preview
The nitrogen metabolism pathway encompasses the biological processes by which organisms acquire, assimilate, transform, and excrete nitrogen. Nitrogen is essential for the synthesis of amino acids, nucleotides, and other vital biomolecules. The pathway includes both anabolic (biosynthetic) and catabolic (degradative) reactions that manage nitrogen flow within cells and across ecosystems. Key processes include nitrogen fixation, nitrate assimilation, ammonia assimilation, amino acid catabolism, and the urea cycle. Defects in this pathway can lead to metabolic disorders such as hyperammonemia.
