Nitroreductase (NTR)

Target
NTR
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Nitroreductases (NTRs) are a family of oxidoreductase enzymes, primarily found in bacteria, that catalyze the reduction of nitroaromatic and nitroheterocyclic compounds. These enzymes use NAD(P)H as an electron donor to reduce nitro groups on substrates, often resulting in the activation of prodrugs or the detoxification/biotransformation of environmental pollutants. Engineered forms of NTRs are used in cancer gene therapy to selectively activate chemotherapeutics within tumor microenvironments.
