NKX2-2 antisense RNA 1 is a long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the NKX2-2 gene. It resides in the cytoplasm and can regulate the transcription level of NKX2-2. Overexpression of NKX2-2-AS1 in neural stem cells promotes differentiation into oligodendrocytes, a process accompanied by a modest increase in NKX2-2 mRNA levels. This suggests NKX2-2-AS1 may have biological functions not limited to the cis-regulation of NKX2-2, possibly affecting differentiation through other mechanisms as well. Current research positions NKX2-2-AS1 as a regulatory RNA important for neural development and differentiation, but its role in disease states or as a therapeutic target remains undefined[2].
