NLRC4 is a key component of the inflammasome, an innate immune sensor that responds to cytosolic bacterial infections. Upon activation by bacterial ligands via NAIP proteins, NLRC4 oligomerizes and recruits caspase-1, leading to the maturation of IL-1β and IL-18 and the induction of pyroptosis.
NLRC4 inflammasome inhibitors are under development.
