NLRP1 is an intracellular pattern recognition receptor that functions as a sensor of pathogens and cellular damage. Upon activation, NLRP1 assembles the inflammasome complex, leading to caspase-1 activation and subsequent maturation and secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18. It also plays a role in programmed cell death pathways including pyroptosis and apoptosis. Variants in NLRP1 are associated with autoimmune diseases such as Type I diabetes, lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, and vitiligo.
NLRP1 inflammasome activation leads to caspase-1 activation, resulting in IL-1β and IL-18 maturation and secretion, and pyroptosis.
