Overview

NLR family pyrin domain containing 5 (NLRP5) is an intracellular protein that belongs to the NOD-like receptor family and contains a pyrin domain, a NACHT domain, and leucine-rich repeats. It is predominantly expressed in oocytes, where it is an essential structural component of the subcortical maternal complex (SCMC), a multiprotein complex critical for early embryonic development. NLRP5 is required for the storage and regulation of maternal proteins, localization of cortical granules, organization of cortical actin, and prevention of polyspermy during fertilization. Disruption of NLRP5 function is associated with oocyte maturation arrest and imprinting disorders, resulting in early embryonic developmental failure[1][2][6].
