NMDA glutamate receptor (NMDAR)

Target
NMDAR
Molecular classification
Ionotropic glutamate receptor, Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

The NMDA glutamate receptor is an ionotropic glutamate receptor subtype that mediates excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. It is a heterotetrameric complex typically composed of GluN1 and GluN2 (or GluN3) subunits. Activation requires the binding of glutamate and glycine (or D-serine) and the relief of Mg²⁺ block via membrane depolarization. It plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory, and is implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders due to its involvement in excitotoxicity.
