NMDA Receptor NR2B Subunit (GluN2B)

Target
GluN2B
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Receptor, Glutamate receptor, NMDA receptor
01

Overview

The NMDA receptor NR2B subunit (GluN2B) is a critical component of the NMDA receptor complex, an ionotropic glutamate receptor in the central nervous system. It plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity, learning, memory, and pain perception. The receptor is a heterotetramer, typically composed of two NR1 subunits and two NR2 subunits. The NR2B subunit contributes unique biophysical and pharmacological properties to the receptor complex. Mutations or dysregulation of NR2B have been linked to various neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and intellectual disability.
