NMDA-type Glutamate Receptor (NMDA-R)

Target
NMDA-R
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor, Glutamate receptor
01

Overview

The NMDA-type glutamate receptor (NMDA-R) is a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors that functions as a ligand-gated ion channel. It plays a central role in excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system and is crucial for synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory formation. Activation requires simultaneous binding of glutamate and glycine/D-serine. The receptor is blocked by Mg²⁺ at resting membrane potentials. NMDA receptors are implicated in numerous neurological disorders.
