Overview

NMNAT1 pseudogene 4 (NMNAT1P4) is a pseudogene related to the NMNAT1 (Nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase 1) gene, which encodes a key nuclear enzyme in NAD biosynthesis, essential for normal cell metabolism and associated with diseases such as Leber congenital amaurosis when mutated. However, as a pseudogene, NMNAT1P4 does not encode a functional protein and is not known to participate in biological pathways, disease mechanisms, or serve as a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes like NMNAT1P4 are considered non-functional genomic sequences that may arise from duplication events of protein-coding genes. GeneCards lists NMNAT1P4 among several recognized NMNAT1 pseudogenes on different chromosomes (including chromosome 4). There is no evidence that NMNAT1P4 has clinical, pharmacological, or biomarker utility. The closely related functional gene NMNAT1 (nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase 1) is an enzyme involved in NAD biosynthesis and is a recognized therapeutic and research target. NMNAT1 pseudogene 4 is distinct from NMNAT1 and is not itself a molecular target.
