No biological target

01

Overview

"No biological target" refers to the absence of a defined molecular entity—such as a receptor, enzyme, channel, transporter, or protein—that can be specifically engaged by a drug or molecular probe. This designation is commonly used in experimental protocols as a control, especially in gene knockdown or antisense oligonucleotide studies, to verify that observed effects are not due to non-specific targeting. It does not correspond to any gene, protein, or biological structure. It is not a true therapeutic target, and listing it as such in scientific or pharmacological databases is incorrect[4][5][6][7].
