Overview

Pain receptors, or nociceptors, are specialized sensory neurons that detect damaging or potentially damaging stimuli in the body. These receptors are present as relatively unspecialized nerve endings distributed throughout most body tissues. When activated by noxious chemical, thermal, or mechanical stimuli, nociceptors transduce these signals into electrical impulses that travel to the central nervous system (CNS), ultimately resulting in the perception of pain. They are classified based on conduction velocity (Aδ and C fibers) and neurochemical properties (peptidergic and non-peptidergic). Key receptor molecules include ASICs, P2X3 receptors, and TRPV1 receptors. Nociceptors serve a critical protective function but also play roles in pathological conditions such as chronic pain syndromes.
