Overview

Non-muscle myosin IIA (NM IIA) is a molecular motor protein that generates intracellular contractile force, drives actin cytoskeleton dynamics, and facilitates cellular processes such as cell migration, cytokinesis, adhesion, tissue morphogenesis, and maintenance of epithelial barrier function. It is a hexamer composed of two heavy chains (MYH9 gene product), two regulatory light chains, and two essential light chains. Regulation occurs primarily through phosphorylation of its regulatory light chain. Mutations in MYH9 are associated with various diseases, including MYH9-related disorders and cancer. It is an area of active research due to its involvement in cancer progression/resistance mechanisms via cytoskeletal control networks like ROCK-NMIIA signaling.
