Non-selective cation channels (NSCCs) are a diverse group of ion channels that permit the passage of multiple types of cations—primarily sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), and calcium (Ca²⁺)—with little or no selectivity between them. These channels are found across various organisms, including plants and animals, and play critical roles in physiological processes such as nutrient uptake, electrical signaling, cell volume regulation, and mechanotransduction. Key families include HCN channels and TRP/TRPC channels. Gating mechanisms are diverse and include voltage, ligand binding, mechanical stretch, and changes in osmotic pressure or pH. Dysfunction has been linked to various pathologies including arrhythmias, hypertension-related organ damage, and neurological disorders.
